TIP: Asking profound questions is a skill every effective dad needs. Such questions can reveal inner motivations and dreams. They can solve problems, analyze risks, and express leadership. Like an intricate brass key, a profound question can unlock your child's or spouse's mind and heart, hopes and dreams.

Here are some profound questions to start your list. Add your own.

  • Is something heavy on your shoulders today?
  • Right now, what brings you 80% of your joy? What causes 80 percent of your frustration, tension or pressures?

  • What do you think I misunderstand most about you?

  • If you had all the time and money needed, knew that you couldn't fail, and were free to choose to do anything you wanted, what would you do?

  • I've got __ of time right now, how could I spend it in helping you?

My thanks to Bobb Biehl for teaching me about profound questions.
